Het is geen geheim dat ik dol ben op de boeken van Jane Austen, én op adaptaties. Soms combineer ik mijn liefdes en lees ik een leuk boek dat geïnspireerd is op een van de boeken van Austen. Dus vandaag heb ik vijf leuke Austen-adaptaties voor jullie!

1. The Secret Diary of Lizzie Bennet

Twenty‑four‑year‑old grad student Lizzie Bennet is saddled with student loan debt and still living at home along with her two sisters—beautiful Jane and reckless Lydia. When she records her reflections on life for her thesis project and posts them on YouTube, she has no idea The Lizzie Bennet Diaries will soon take on a life of their own, turning the Bennet sisters into internet celebrities seemingly overnight.

Ik had het al eerder over The Lizzie Bennet Diaries , een YouTube vlog gebaseerd op Pride and Prejudice, maar wist je dat er ook een boek over is? In dit boek volg je Lizzie terwijl ze haar vlogs schrijft. Een must-read voor fans! En kan je er geen genoeg van krijgen? Dan is er ook nog The Epic Adventures of Lydia Bennet, over dezelfde YouTube serie.

2. Longbourn

In this irresistibly imagined belowstairs answer to Pride and Prejudice, the servants take center stage. Sarah, the orphaned housemaid, spends her days scrubbing the laundry, polishing the floors, and emptying the chamber pots for the Bennet household. Ook Longbourn is een adaptatie van Pride and Prejudice, maar hier volg je het verhaal van de familie Bennet door de ogen van hun personeel. Met een nieuw perspectief kan je het bekende plot volgen, het is een soort extra dimensie aan de wereld van Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. De referenties zijn met klasse gedaan en niet te overheersend, waardoor het wel een op zichzelf staand verhaal is.

3. Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters

“Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters” expands the original text of the beloved Jane Austen novel with all-new scenes of giant lobsters, rampaging octopi, two-headed sea serpents, and other biological monstrosities. As our story opens, the Dashwood sisters are evicted from their childhood home and sent to live on a mysterious island full of savage creatures and dark secrets. While sensible Elinor falls in love with Edward Ferrars, her romantic sister Marianne is courted by both the handsome Willoughby and the hideous man-monster Colonel Brandon. Can the Dashwood sisters triumph over meddlesome matriarchs and unscrupulous rogues to find true love? Or will they fall prey to the tentacles that are forever snapping at their heels?

Dit is echt te grappig (maar vooral te ongeloofwaardig). Want hoe zou een boek van Jane Austen lezen als je het mixt met wat zeemonsters? Deze Austen-adaptatie is zeker geen literair hoogstandje, maar het is leuk om te zien hoe vindingrijk de auteur was in het aanpassen van de bekende uitspraken zodat ze in het zeemonster-thema passen. 4. Bridget Jones

Bridget Jones kennen we natuurlijk voornamelijk van de films met Renée Zellweger, Hugh Grant en Colin Firth. Maar wist je dat die films weer gebaseerd zijn op de boeken van Helen Fielding? De boeken lezen heerlijk weg en laten je even dromen dat je zelf ook je Mr. Darcy tegen zal komen (het liefste in de vorm van Colin Firth natuurlijk).

5. The Jane Austen Book Club
